Domande di Internet

People that have lived or live in India, is the sexual harassment as big of a problem as what is displayed in the news and do women fear going out into public?

As a chick who lives in a metropolitan city in India, chicks usually face harrassment during teens cause people think they can get away. As a grown woman they usually don’t try any antics. I even travel at night, it’s pretty safe.
But from what I have heard it’s pretty bad in rural north India.

15f, Indian. Before the quarantine, I used to walk to all my classes, and despite them being only a few blocks away, the amount of stares I got made me fucking homicidal. I told my mom about it, she told me not to wear shorts.

also, about 5 years ago, I was in a market with my mom. It was very crowded, and I mean shoulder to shoulder crowded. Suddenly, I very distinctly feel someone grab my ass. 10 y/o me thought it must’ve been a mistake, till the guy had the fucking audacity to turn around, look me in the eyes, and smile.

I have also been followed by a creep, and he would’ve followed me home if I hadn’t nonchalantly taken out the switchblade I always keep with me (don’t ask) when I’m walking home alone, and started flicking it open and closed.

It’s like Egypt but x10

Ask MassimoL is one of the most popular sub MassimoL here. And people here are discussing if women are safe in india? This shows what image we Indians have created of our country in international media. As an Indian, I am ashamed myself, that we, the Indian could not make our country safer for our sisters and family members.
Now, to answer your question: if I say, no! Ladies are safe in India, would be a blatant lie.
So, the painfully true answer is: yes sexual harassment is rampant. It happens each and every day. Majority of the ladies have faced some sort of harassment in their life.
Either in public transport, or at work place or in a crowded gathering and from known people in their community.
I do not have the statistics.
Butz trust me, the statistics you see in some report, some internet survey is wrong. The actual numbers are 10 times more. Because, India is a gigantic huge country with 1.3 billion population.
There are women in the country, who do not even understand the word called domestic violence and sexual harassment. Forget about complaining to police. Women outside of the tier 1 cities are not empowered.
So, the life style of a women living in a city like Bombay, having a decent life style, education, job is drastically different from the woman living in a rural area who has to walk 5miles every day to bring drinking water.
So, the former lady will report any incident she faces, but the later does not have the courage, and the means to report the issue.
I have lived in many cities in India. Traveled to many many places from north to west to South. The thing is: women are harassed every where. Be cities or villages.
Sexual harassment is a very big problem in India and the mentality and society is the root of this problem.
