Therapists of Internet, have you ever had a patient who you truly thought was “unfixable”?

Waiting to see my therapist in here

Personality disorders are a helluva drug.

There is a slight problem with the question. The point of therapy is not to “fix” someone but to teach them the proper skills to be more able to adjust to their environment and deal with stressors via coping mechanisms and gaining self-awareness. I know this bc I’ve been going to therapy since I was 14 which is a long time.

No one is unfixable. Maybe I can’t do it and they need an approach I can’t muster, they could be more work than I or another professional can envision or possibly they don’t want to be fixed. We are complicated, multi faceted creatures with all sorts of quirks and experiences.

With that said no one is unfixable.

Obligatory “not a therapist.” I went to therapy twice with my ex, marriage counseling when we were still married, and family counseling after we were divorced and he had lost visitation rights with the kids. Both times after just a few sessions, the counselor (two different people at different places) told him it wasn’t working out and he shouldn’t come back. I went a few times afterward, but felt like it was kind of pointless by then. NGL I was sort of pissed off at him and the counselor that he got expelled. We were supposed to be trying to make things better.
