So glad that you knew her well enough to give her the benefit of the doubt and expect that there might be something deeper going on for her to be acting so out of character. While it doesn’t necessarily justify what she did to you, it definitely does explain it and I’m glad you have enough forgiveness in you to stay friends with her. It seems like she is a really important person to you and wow, losing your friend and dog in the same fell swoop would be a lot for anybody. Sending warmth to you both.
