My car was broken into. Nothing was stolen as far as I can tell but my glove box was rifled through, probably for my information. Should I report Id theft in advance or wait for something to happen?

Ed ecco le risposte:

Call the non emergency police number to report it, so then its on record if anything does happen.

They probably weren’t looking for information. They were looking for cash or credit cards. You’re probably fine.

I think you should post this in r/legaladvice mate

Doesn’t hurt to make a report. If nothing else, the department’s Crime Analysis unit can use the information to identify crime trends.

If nothing is missing as you say and no broken window/damage, it was probably some kids looking for anything they can grab quickly. If they were looking for your ID information, they probably would’ve taken it outright and not try to copy it while sitting in your car illegally.

Police report and then check your credit report in a month or two. If you do notice any unauthorized activity, you will be forced to get a police report anyway. Good luck.

It’s a junkie looking for cash or something to sell quickly. Expensive sunglasses, electronics, etc.

I found and returned some dude’s binder that had every single login for retirement accounts, airline accounts, medical, banking info, etc. Some crackhead broke into his car, stole a briefcase and ditched this book in front of my apartment. They are too dumb and impatient to realize the value of ID theft.
